The largest member of the dolphin family and the apex predator of the ocean — with no natural predators anywhere in the world. The largest adult males reach 32 feet and 6 tons. Each individual can be identified by the shape of its dorsal fin and the unique grey saddle patch behind it.
Orcas have exceptional echolocation — producing directional clicks that can detect prey through hundreds of meters of water. Hearing range extends to 100 kHz.
Each pod has a unique dialect — a set of calls shared only within that pod. Dialects are learned, not inherited. This vocal culture is passed through generations and is the most sophisticated language-like system documented in any non-human animal.
The most versatile hunters of any mammal. Different ecotypes specialize in entirely different prey and tactics — from herding salmon to hunting whales. Hunting strategies are culturally transmitted.
Gestation
17 months — the longest gestation of any dolphin. Females give birth every 3–10 years. Females may have only 4–6 calves in a lifetime.
Birth
Newborns are 7–8 feet long and weigh 265–350 lbs — larger than most adult dolphins.
Calves
Calves nurse for 1–2+ years. In Resident populations, calves stay with their mother for life. Sons never leave their mother's side.
Females reach sexual maturity at 10–13 years; males at 13–16 years. Female orcas undergo menopause — one of only three non-human species known to do so.
The most complex social structure of any non-human animal. The basic unit is the matriline: a female, her offspring, and their offspring — all staying together for life.
Orcas can swim at 35 mph in short bursts. They can leap fully out of the water despite weighing up to 6 tons.
Orcas are the only predator known to deliberately hunt great white sharks, turning them upside down (tonic immobility) and extracting their liver. Single orcas have been documented killing blue whales.
60–90+ years. No natural predators. Threats include prey depletion, marine pollution (PCBs accumulate in their fat), and vessel noise masking their calls.
